Xea Kirkland, Saugerties, has been awarded a $1000 scholarship from the Friends of the Saugerties Public Library.
Kirkland, an AP student and community volunteer, plans to attend Clark University where she will major in community, youth, and education.
She is a daughter of Arden Kirkland.
Kirkland said “I grew up in the library,” which nurtured her love of education and community service.
The Friends serve as support and a fund-raising arm for the library. Friends President Ray Rebholz said, “The scholarship is based upon community service, especially at our library, along with other volunteer service. We are pleased for Xea receiving this award. She’s a role model for other young adults.”
Gail Ledwith, chair of the Friends’ scholarship committee, said that Kirkland was the committee’s “first choice. Her commitment to the Saugerties Library and other community service is to be applauded.”
